I'm guessing you were really going after a lot of those pickups then.
I had you da man after one playthrough + one level too. Simply spent the first 3 levels making sure every single monster piece made a guy slip. Having 30k after first 2 levels helped. If I actually managed to get some pickups (I managed to get virtually nothing) it might actually be possible in one playthrough.
Maybe that's how that guy who keeps hogging the high scores list is doing it...
